Eric,
I agree with you that blogging and social media are in some ways the same thing, but what I'm referring to in this post is content that's targeted towards Digg or another social media site. While blogging is social, there is a big difference in just writing and writing content that targets a specific audience. I'm not saying there's an option not to engage with readers, but there is certainly an option to ignore social media sites or to pay attention to them.

Internet Apprentice and Herbert,
Thanks. I'm glad you're learning some things here.

I always learn something new from your posts - and this time was no exception.

I think that I should be focusing on social media more, as I now see that blogging is social media (thanks for the epiphany). StumbleUpon, Digg, come find me. : )

Another great post on social media. This is why this site is my source for thoughts on how to use social media. I guess in the end it all comes down to quality content. As long as what you are doing is valuable and interesting, it should appeal to both groups, right?

I absolutely agree with you, there needs to be a balance for bloggers using Social Media. The resulting traffic can be very fickle; if you're relying on it as your soul source of traffic, not a very smart move. But, as you stated, you've also got to ensure you're not alienating your loyal readers by focusing content for the social media audience.
I think the balance comes when bloggers hand-pick and purposefully use the right mix of social media for their particular efforts.

Great post!
Maria :-)

WHOA! Full stop.

Blogging is social media. You are presenting your thoughts to the internet. You are communicating to and with your readers.

There is no option here - to be a successful blogger, you must engage in the conversation.

I find that around 70% of my efforts toward content and 30% toward marketing efforts such as social media seems to work well for me. I try to write content that works for niche sites, but often times they overlap and work almost as well for general news sites. Probably not as good as focusing solely on creating content for large news sites though.

I agree with you. I think the best thing is to write for your audience. However, I think your audience may appreciate every once in a while a slight twist and different type of content. As long as you do not overdo it. You should be fine.
